Volunteers from different backgrounds share their experiences and explain why they continue to volunteer.
Yantian, Guangdong Province, October, 2015
Without exception, everyone who met Grandma C at the Yee Hong Heights elderly home in Yantian, Guangdong Province, aspires to be like her, when they are 88 ! Exuberant and smiling, she did not have any need for dentures nor hearing aids. Instead, she had curls in her silver hair, colour co-ordinated lipstick, earrings and manicured eyebrows. A pretty picture. Educated in Hong Kong, she reads and holds multiple roles as a volunteer helping those in the home, much less fortunate than her. Her many photos hung in the halls reflecting her energy as a volunteer at the home. She was also our approachable visitors’ guide.
She stays in touch with her family, nieces and nephews through Skype and the latest tablet technology. Even at this age, she values her independence.
Being a volunteer myself, I learned much from her. She inspires me as an example of how a grateful heart lives joyfully, regardless of circumstance and age. I would love to visit her again.
