A series of captivating stories of our Beneficiaries.
It is such a rare blessing to still be able to actively help others much younger than you when one is already 82. Uncle Kwong, a resident of an elderly home, is one such person. Perhaps his motto of “In helping others, you help yourself” has worked well for him throughout his life and he is now rewarded with good health to continue living out his altruism.
I met Uncle Kwong at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Shenzhen Society for Rehabilitation Yee Hong Heights (YHH) along with a group of 40 volunteers from HK. During the residents party which we hosted, we played games with the elderly, sang songs for them and we even invited the elderly to join in and dance with us. Uncle Kwong shown great enthusiasm in participating in all these activities and inspired us to believe that nothing is impossible to do if you have a will to do so.
Currently, he is the proud owner of a long list of volunteer and charitable activities such as accompanying and ensuring that the sick, immobile and elderly patients make it to their doctors’ and physiotherapists’ appointments, sharing and counselling the depressed, delivering cooked food to the doorsteps of those who are unable to leave their home easily, acting as a librarian cum receptionist in the elderly home where he now resides etc.
His devotion to helping others in need was perhaps inculcated when he served as a volunteer in the Auxilliary Medical Service helping out in the historic 1972 double landslides in Hong Kong which destroyed homes and killed many. Uncle Kwong was given the gruesome task of searching and removing dead bodies buried in the mud in the Sau Mao Ping site. Perhaps this confrontation with the fragility of life and his depressing experience of such large scale tragedy and its aftermath, etched an indelible mark that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Since then, Uncle Kwong has never forgotten how lucky he is and his purpose in life. Just by speaking with him, I could feel his joy and strength and age is just a number!
