2023 ACE Art Champion

My design was inspired by my grandmother’s story, she would secretly go goldfish scooping after she sent my dad to school, I was surprised by her love for fun! I also learnt goldfish scooping was a happy moment for many elders. That’s why I used the round outline of the tambourine to mimic the plastic bowl for goldfish scooping, and added the orange and yellow ribbons to represent the dynamics of fish tails.

Before painting on the tambourine, I asked my grandmother about her favourite childhood activities. She mentioned games that I had never heard of which made me want to try them out. I live with my grandma and we often play card games like UNO or traditional games like paper fortune teller together,  she’s my good friend. I hope my work will bring back happy memories for elders in the community too.

I really enjoyed the process of working with students on this programme. Through creating artwork for the elderly, I witnessed that they put a lot of thought into developing the idea for their piece. The students thought about what elders would want, how to make them happy, and how important they are to society. The students benefited a lot from this programme.
