ANCHOR Community WITH ELDERS

MO Community

Our donors, sponsors and partners were invaluable during the pandemic to meet the urgent needs of community elders. Care packages and home appliances were delivered directly to homes of singleton elders. Many volunteers reported how this simple act of human contact brought cheer to lonely elders. Volunteers produced Cheers4Elders videos to share with elder facility partners.

CASE STUDY

ACE Academy

The Approach

  • Our goal is to build relationships across generations by meaningfully connecting elder facilities with nearby schools for long-term collaboration
  • Elders and youth develop friendships through arts & crafts, music & movement, and horticulture programmes
  • Our intergenerational programmes benefit people across the ages, building a more inclusive society

ACE Academy

Extracurricular

  • ACE Academy moved online during the pandemic so elders could continue interacting with youth
  • Elders from The Salvation Army Bradbury Home of Loving Kindness stayed connected with students from The Salvation Army Tin Ka Ping School, making friends through art making
  • As restrictions relax, most ACE Academy programmes are transitioning to in-person engagement, to the delight of elders and youth

ACE Academy

In curriculum

  • As pandemic restrictions relax, elders have been invited to attend regular classes in school with students
  • Some very happy grandparents were invited to their grandchildren’s school during school hours at Salvation Army Tin Ka Ping School
  • Here the two generations learnt some amazing dance moves together during multiple intelligences class. They also performed an intergenerational dance for their schoolmates

ACE Academy

Graduation

  • After making friends over six sessions, the old and young celebrated their time together with a graduation ceremony
  • This is a very empowering and touching event for community elders – some have never had the privilege of education or attended school
  • We hosted a public exhibition of their artwork, promoting the benefits of intergenerational engagement
